Top News of the Week

Men's basketball splits non-conference games

The men's basketball team posted its first victory of the season on Wednesday (Nov. 29), defeating Ohio Northern University by an 81-79 margin, thanks in part to junior Kevin Gamble's (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart) career-high 20 points. On Sunday (Dec. 3), the Scots fell to No. 9 Washington University (MO), with sophomore Preston Laketa (Concord, Mich./Hanover-Horton) and Gamble scoring 19 points each. Seniors Rob Holmes (Ada, Mich./Rockford) and Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) also posted career-highs against the Bears, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively. Alma, which has hit at least half of its shots over the past two games, is off until Friday, Dec. 15, when it welcomes North Central College (IL) to Art Smith Arena for a 7:30 p.m. contest. 

Women's basketball players set individual marks in losses

The women's basketball team dropped two home games last week, 75-70 to Adrian on Wednesday (Nov. 29) and 75-46 to No. 6 Trine University on Saturday (Dec. 2). Four Scots reached new career-highs over the week: Junior Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) had 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting against Adrian and senior Chloee King (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central) tallied 19 points, sinking four three-pointers. Freshmen Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) and Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio/Arch Bishop Alter) had 16 and 10 points, respectively, against the nationally-ranked Thunder. Sophomore Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) also tied her career-high with six assists in the contest. 

Ladd wins 141-pound bracket at Ohio Northern Invitational

The wrestling team travelled to the campus of Ohio Northern University for the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 2). Sophomore Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) took home the title as the best 141-pound wrestler, winning his bracket, while senior Taylor McPhail (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) took second in the 197-pound class. As a team, the Scots finished eighth out of the 11 teams competing. 

Indoor season begins for track team

The track and field team began its indoor season on Saturday (Dec. 2) with its annual trip to Saginaw Valley State University for the SVSU Holiday Classic, featuring participants from across all NCAA divisions. The men's team took home three separate top-five finishes, while the women's team was led by senior Hannah Garn's (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte) sixth-place showing in the 5000-meter run. In the sprinting events, freshman Torres Ingraham [Nassau, Bahamas/Northview (AL)] turned in the second-fastest time in Alma College history in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.14, while sophomore John Mitrzyk (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) posted a 23.29 in the 200-meter run for the fourth-fastest mark in school history. 

Swimmers set personal bests at Carthage Classic

The swimming and diving team traveled to Kenosha, Wis., for the three-day A3 Carthage Classic last weekend. The Scots finished in eighth place out of 10 teams after three days of events. Junior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) had the top individual score for the team, finishing the meet in 14th place overall. She recorded a pair of top-ten finishes on Saturday, placing sixth in the 400 medley (4:59.09) and tenth in the 200 butterfly (2:23.85). Sophomores Sydney Louis-Ferdinand (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and Cole Malhoit (Canton, Mich./Canton) set personal best race times, with Louis-Ferdinand placing 16th in the 400 medley (5:03.76) and Malhoit finishing the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.34. The team will remain idle until the new year, when they travel to Olivet College for a meet on January 6.
