Women's golf team in the hunt for spring playoff spot
The Alma College women's golf team is fourth place in the MIAA standings after four MIAA Jamborees and enters this weekend's MIAA Fall Finale looking to secure its highest finish since the 2003 campaign. The Scots have averaged 349.5 strokes per round through four events and sit 40 strokes ahead of Trine University (IN), which is fifth with a 359.5 average. The top four teams after this weekend's 36-hole event qualify for the 2018 MIAA Qualifying Tournament, which will be held in April. The winner of the three-day, 54-hole tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships.
Women's soccer to host Pink Game Saturday
The Alma College women's soccer team will host its annual Kick it to Cancer game on Saturday, Oct. 6, when it takes on Olivet College. The Scots will wear special pink jerseys to raise awareness for the various forms of cancer that have affected friends and family of the team and coaching staff. Campus organizations involved in cancer awareness will also be on hand at Scotland Yard. The match is slated for a Noon start.
Football wins on Homecoming for first time since 2007
Behind a powerful rushing game, the Alma College football team defeated Kalamazoo College, 30-10, on Saturday (Sept. 30) in the annual Homecoming game for the Scots at Bahlke Field. Alma, which snapped a nine-game losing streak on Homecoming, racked up 364 yards rushing in the win, led by senior Dylan Zaborowski's (Jackson, Mich./Michigan Center) career-high 167 yards. Junior Caleb Reinhart (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) toted the ball 13 times for 147 yards and three scores, and continues to maintain his lead in the MIAA with 11 touchdowns. Reinhart, the MIAA's second-leading rusher with a 142.8 yards per game average, now ranks third among all NCAA Division III players in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game. Defensively, senior Dustin Tripp (Byron Center, Mich./Hundsonville) tallied three sacks in the win and is now ranked fifth nationally with an average of 1.5 sacks per game.
Volleyball falls to Olivet
The Alma College volleyball team lost to Olivet College in four sets on Wednesday (Sept. 27), dropping the final two games by a combined five points. Sophomore Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky./Scott Country) led the team with 13 kills and 24 digs, tying her career high for terminations. Miller is eighth in the MIAA in digs (212) and digs per set (4.16). Junior Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich./Lowell), the team's leading blocker, posted seven in the match against the Comets to lead all players.
Women's soccer wraps up first half of MIAA play
The Alma College women's soccer team split its two matches last week to wrap up the first half of the MIAA schedule. Senior Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II) scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Trine University on Tuesday (Sept. 26), while senior Janelle Christensen (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) scored both goals for the Scots in a 3-2 setback at Albion on Saturday (Sept. 30). Entering the second half of the league schedule, Alma is in seventh place with six points and sits nine points out of fourth place.
Men's soccer drops pair of road matches
Sophomore Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored the only goal of the week for the Alma College men's soccer team, which tied Adrian College, 1-1, on Wednesday (Sept. 27) before falling by a 2-0 margin at Hope College on Saturday (Sept. 30). Sophomore Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) made seven saves against the Bulldogs and added five more at Hope to maintain his lead in the MIAA in saves with 54.
Morrissey leads men's golf at MIAA Jamboree #3
The Alma College men's golf team traveled to West Olive, Mich., on Monday (Sept. 25) for the third MIAA Jamboree of the season. The Scots did not score as a team but had three golfers participate individually. The lowest card came from freshman Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich./Big Rapids), who tied for 36th with an 85.
Women's golf wraps up MIAA Jamboree season
The Alma College women's golf team played in its final two MIAA Jamborees of the season last week and maintained its fourth-place showing in the league standings. On Wednesday (Sept. 27), the Scots posted a season-best 343 to finish third, with junior Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) tying for fifth place with an 82. Senior Katie Neiswender (Quincy, Ill./Notre Dame) tied for seventh with a season-best 83, then turned in an 85 on Saturday (Sept. 30) to lead the Scots to a sixth-place finish. Entering the MIAA Fall Finale, Hilley is in ninth place among the MIAA's golfers with 338 strokes (84.5 average), while junior Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) ranks 11th with a score of 346 (86.5 average).
