MIAA semifinal rematch set for Monday for women's soccer
The Alma College women's soccer team will welcome Kalamazoo College to Scotland Yard on Monday, Sept. 11, in a rematch of last season's MIAA Tournament semifinal, which the Scots won on penalty kicks. First touch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Volleyball to host top-ranked Calvin Wednesday
The Alma College volleyball team will open a four-match week on Wednesday, Sept. 13, hosting defending NCAA Division III champion and top-ranked Calvin College at 6:30 p.m. in Art Smith Arena. The Scots will then travel to Kenosha, Wis., to take part in a weekend tournament at Carthage College.
Trio of home events on tap for Saturday
The Alma College football team will host Benedictine University (IL) in a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, in a busy day on the Alma College campus. The women's golf team will stage the Scottie Invitational at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Pine River Country Club, while the women's soccer team will host Saint Mary's College (IN) at 3:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
Football stopped late by Manchester in home opener
The Alma College football team suffered a 33-31 defeat to Manchester University on Saturday night (Sept. 9) in the home opener for the Scots at Bahlke Field. The Scots were driving in Manchester territory with under a minute to play, but the Spartans forced a turnover to seal the victory. Junior Caleb Reinhart (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) scored a career-high three touchdowns and ran for 84 yards, including the game's first two scores to put Alma ahead 14-0, while sophomore Austin Spratling (Grand Rapids, Mich./Wyoming Kelloggsville) scored his first career touchdown on his first career carry to pull the Scots within two points late in the fourth quarter. Senior Zac Peterson (Holt, Mich./Holt) posted a game-high 15 tackles, while senior Colton Tyson (Vassar, Mich./Vassar) made 21 stops.
Volleyball splits first two MIAA matches
The Alma College volleyball team split a pair of matches last week, falling to Saint Mary's at home on Wednesday (Sept. 6) before sweeping Kalamazoo on the road on Saturday (Sept. 9). Junior Brianna Zimmer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) set a career high in kills against the Hornets with 11. In addition, senior Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) and freshman Haley Novak (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) each posted season highs in assists with 23 and 14, respectively.
Men's soccer team looking for footing
The Alma College men's soccer team went 0-3 this week, falling to Aquinas at home on Tuesday (Sept. 5) before traveling to Aurora, Ill., where it lost to Benedictine University and Aurora University on Friday (Sept. 8) and Sunday (Sept. 10). The Scots were shutout in each contest against the tough competition, which sports a combined record of 12-3. Freshman keeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) made eight saves against Aurora, a career high. Alma begins conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at home against Albion.
Women's soccer falls in opening MIAA games
The Alma College women's soccer team suffered a pair of defeats last week as the Scots opened league play. On Wednesday (Sept. 6), Adrian College scored in the 85th minute to capture a 2-1 victory, while on Saturday (Sept. 9), four first-half goals by Olivet College proved to be too much in a 4-1 loss to the Comets on the road. Senior Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) scored for Alma against the Bulldogs, while senior Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II) had the goal for the Scots at Olivet.
Cross country team proves depth at Calvin
Seniors Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte) and Zane Berlanga (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) led the Alma College women's and men's cross country teams, respectively, at the Calvin Knight Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 9). Both the men's and women's team also featured a freshman among their top-five finishers: Callie Jones (Mason, Mich./Mason) for the women and Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) for the men. The Scots are idle until the MIAA Jamboree on September 23.
Women's golf team has strong second day at Olivet Invite
The Alma College women's golf team finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Olivet Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 9) with a final score of 730 (+154), improving upon their 10th-place showing in the opening round on Friday (Sept. 8). Leading the way for the Scots was junior Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood), who finished the day with 173 strokes.
