Football home opener on Saturday
The Alma College football team will open the home portion of its 2017 schedule at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, when it hosts Manchester University (IN) at Bahlke Field. The Scots will put their perfect record in home night games (4-0) on the line against a familiar face. Manchester Head Coach Nate Jensen served as the Scots' defensive coordinator from 2012-15 before taking over the Spartans' program, while assistant coaches Scotty Cole (Alma College, 2012) and Riley Fisher (Alma College, 2015) are both products of the Alma football program. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive a 2017 schedule rally towel, courtesy of Sodexo.
Men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball stage home contests this week
The Alma College men's soccer team will host Aquinas College at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, while the women's soccer team will open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday, Sept. 6, with a 4:00 p.m. match at Scotland Yard with Adrian College. Later that evening, the volleyball team begins MIAA play and hosts their home opener, taking on Saint Mary's College (IN) at 7:00 p.m. in Art Smith Arena.
Women's soccer posts back-to-back ties at Emblem Cup
The Alma College women's soccer team played to back-to-back draws at the 2017 Advantage Emblem Cup in Duluth, Minn., over the weekend, marking the first time in program history that the Scots have opened the year with two ties. Freshman Mackenzie Rajewski (Midland, Mich./Midland) and senior Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II) scored Alma's goals in Friday's 2-2 tie with host Saint Scholastica, while senior goalkeeper Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) made 13 saves over the two games, including seven stops in Sunday's (Sept. 3) scoreless game with Concordia (MN). Rajewski, along with junior Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City West), were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Men's soccer team opens season with tie
The Alma College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Millikin in its season opener on Friday (Sept. 1) evening. Freshman Kyle Salisbury (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) scored the tying goal in the 76th minute, while sophomore goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) made five saves in the game.
Football holds on for season-opening road win
The Alma College football team won its opening game of the 2017 season, defeating Saint Vincent College, 40-34, at Chuck Noll Field in Latrobe, Pa. The Scots never trailed in the game and withstood several attempts by the Bearcats in final quarter to steal the lead. Senior Dylan Zaborowski (Jackson, Mich./Michigan Center) completed 10 of his 22 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, including a 71-yard heave to sophomore Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich./Concord) with 9:40 to play in the game to put the Scots ahead for good. Hinkle ended the day with a game-high 105 yards and two touchdowns on four catches. Junior Caleb Reinhart (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) rushed for 99 yards and two scores on 22 carries as the Scots posted 173 yards on the ground for the game, but were held to just 17 yards rushing in the second half. Defensively, senior Colton Tyson (Vassar, Mich./Vassar) led the Scots with 13 tackles.
Volleyball splits matches at Mount Union Invitational
The Alma College volleyball team opened the year splitting a pair of games on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 1-2) at the Mount Union Invitational in Alliance, Ohio. Sophomore Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky./Scott Country) was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Scots in kills in three of the team's four matches, posting a total of 36 for the weekend. Miller also paced the team in digs with 45. In addition, senior Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) performed well, racking up 62 assists.
Runners take on Chippewas, Spartans to open 2017 season
The Alma College cross country teams opened their seasons last Friday (Sept. 1) at the Jeff Drenth Invitational, competing against squads from host Central Michigan University and Michigan State University. Seniors Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte) and Chelse Van Spronsen (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) paced the women's team while junior Justin Jones (Cedar Springs, Mich./Cedar Springs) led the men.
Men's golf team opens season at Lou Collins Invite
The Alma College men's golf team landed in 16th place at the end of the Lou Collins Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 1-2) in Battle Creek, Mich. Freshman Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich./Big Rapids) led the Scots with a 67th-place finish and final score of 165 (+21). The Scots have a week off before the first round of the MIAA Jamboree in Adrian, Mich. on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
