Baseball takes two from Adrian for first time in 25 years
The Alma College baseball team split its weekend series with defending MIAA champion Adrian College, including a home doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs on Saturday (April 15), marking the first time since the 1992 campaign that the Scots have taken both ends of the doubleheader from Adrian. Junior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) picked up both wins on the mound for the Scots, coming in as the final reliever in Game 1 before pitching the first six innings of Game 2, and now has a MIAA-best six victories. For the series, Senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) hit .600, going 6-for-10 with three extra-base hits, while freshmen Jaret Koin (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) and Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) both .500 and .467 respectively, with Koin collecting a team-high eight hits while Acker posted a team-best six RBIs and his first career home run. Peczynski, a four-year starter, enters this weekend's series with Calvin College ranked second in career games played (148) and hits (133), while his eight career triples - including two last weekend - tie him for second all-time.
Softball has win streak snapped at Saint Mary's
The Alma College softball team went 3-1 last week with a sweep of Calvin College and a split against Saint Mary's College, which led the MIAA entering the series. The Scots are currently in third place in the conference and have upcoming doubleheaders at Hope College, which is currently undefeated in league play, and at Trine University, which is ranked seventh in the country and only has one loss in the MIAA. Sophomore McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) hit her third home run of the year against the Knights on Wednesday (April 12), tallying six RBI in the series. Senior Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) had a solid game one against the Belles, going 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
Nycz sets career scoring record for men's lacrosse
The Alma College men's lacrosse team split its games last week, defeating Olivet College, 17-7, on Tuesday (April 11) before being held to just five goals in a 17-5 loss to defending league champion Albion College on Saturday (April 15) at Bahlke Field. Sophomore Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois) set the career points record against the Britons, tallying two goals for his 138th point. After 30 games, Nycz has scored 61 goals and tallied a school-record 77 assists to top Marshall Argenta's record of 137 points from 2012-16. Nycz paces the MIAA in points (56) and assists (30) this season, while freshman Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) ranks second in goals (35) and points (54).
Women's lacrosse drops pair of conference games
The Alma College women's lacrosse team dropped two MIAA games last week, falling to Saint Mary's College 13-10 on Thursday (April 13), and Calvin College 19-0 on Saturday (April 15). Against the Belles, junior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich./Holt) recorded her second hat trick of the season while freshman Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) collected a game-high seven ground balls. Senior Darby Kahler (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) finished the week with collecting three draw controls against the Belles and four against the Knights and is currently fifth in the MIAA for draw controls with a career-high 38. Against the Knights, Ray made a career-high 18 saves, tying her for second in the program's history for saves in a single game. The Scots will take a few days to rest before hosting the Adrian College Bulldogs at Bahkle Field for Senior Night on Friday, April 21. The game is set to start at 4 pm.
Men's tennis splits matches in MIAA play
The Alma College men's tennis team defeated Albion College on Tuesday (April 11) by a 5-4 margin before suffering a 7-2 loss at Trine University on Friday (April 14). Senior Grant Hill (Caro, Mich./Caro) won both of his matches last week at No. 1 singles before pairing up with junior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) for a victory on Friday in No. 2 doubles. The Scots are idle until April 25, when they travel to Hope College.
Women's tennis seeking first league win
The Alma College women's tennis team traveled to Adrian and Olivet Colleges last week, suffering two losses in MIAA play. The loss to Olivet on Saturday (April 15) was a hard-fought battle, with the Comets coming away with a 5-4 victory after injury forced a retirement for Alma at No. 5 singles. Junior Matilda Ennis (Glenside, Mich./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) and senior Chloe Ramsey (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) led the Scots with victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively. The Scots host three straight home games to close out the season, beginning with a match against Kalamazoo College on Sunday, April 23.
Scots finish second at Jim Cole Scottie Open
Senior Kathleen Collingwood (Benzonia, Mich./Benzie Central) broke the school record for the hammer throw as the Alma College track & field team finished second at the Jim Cole Scottie Open on Friday (April 14). Juniors Chelse Van Spronsen (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte) and Karen Flesh (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) were all victorious for the Scots during the meet. Van Spronsen won the women's 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time, Garn took first in the women's 10,000-meter run, and Flesh won the women's shot put. The Scots have a week off before competing in the two-day Calvin College Invitational.
