Baseball team scores 25 runs to pick up second win
The Alma College baseball team recorded its second victory of the season on Sunday (March 19), posting a 25-0 victory to wrap up a three-game series at Berea College (KY). The run output ties for the second-highest single-game total in school history, and the most since the 2011 team dropped 25 runs on Kalamazoo. Freshman Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich./Standish-Sterling) hit his first career home run - a grand slam - in the game and tallied a team-high give RBIs. The Scots fell in the other two contests with the Mountaineers by one-run margins on Saturday (March 18). Alma will open the home portion of the 2017 campaign on Tuesday, March 21, against Marygrove College. First pitch at Klenk Park is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Men's lacrosse dominates competition
The Alma College men's lacrosse team cruised to a pair of victories in both of its games last week, posting an 18-5 victory at Heidelberg University (OH) on Wednesday (March 15) before scoring a school-record 25 goals in a 25-8 win against Northland College (WI) on Saturday (March 19) at Bahlke Field. Junior Bryce Bohrmann (Grand Rapids, Mich./Pennville) scored 12 goals in the two games, including a school-record eight markers against the Student Princes. Freshman Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) added 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points during the week, scoring a season-high six against the Lumberjacks.
Women's lacrosse wins in convincing fashion against Northland
The Alma College women's lacrosse team won its only game of the week on Saturday (March 18) when it defeated Northland College (WI), 23-7. Seven Scots registered points en route to the program's largest margin of victory since the 2014 season, led by senior Darby Kahler (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) and junior Katie Rogers (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington Hills) who each had six. Rogers is now tied for first in the MIAA in assists with six, while Kahler is tied for second in goals with 10. Freshman goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made 11 saves against the Lumber Jills and leads the conference in save percentage at 54.9 pct. and goals against average with 8.07.
Men's tennis drops match with Lawrence Tech
The Alma College men's tennis team dropped its home match on Saturday (March 18) to Lawrence Tech University, falling by an 8-1 margin. Junior Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) picked up the Scots' only point, winning the No. 2 singles match.
Women's tennis falls at home to Lawrence Tech
The Alma College women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback to Lawrence Tech University on Saturday (March 18) at the Stone Recreation Center. The Scots only point came from freshman Bernadette Garbay (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge), who won her match at No. 6 singles.
Cheer team wins division at Alma Invite
The Alma College cheer team won its division on Sunday (March 19), hosting the Alma College Invite at Art Smith Arena. The Scots scored 93.5 points, making the strongest debut in program history and received only one deduction. In the lib contest against all the participating teams, junior McKenna Clark (Pierson, Mich./Tri County), sophomore Julia Mocere (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores), senior Jade Paquin (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport) and freshman Gabby Saum (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) won the competition.
A few other tartan tidbits ...
Senior Kaitlyn Arnold (Jackson, Mich./Northwest) was one of 29 recipients from the 2016 fall sports to be awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She is the 12th student-athlete in the history of Alma College to win the award ... Freshman Allie Ray was named the MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week last week after an 11-save performance against Concordia-Chicago on March 12.
